A Jennings County teen died Saturday morning after she was involved in a wreck likely caused by icy roads, police report.

Morgan R. Gibson, 17, of North Vernon was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash on U.S. 50 at County Road 450W, just east of Hayden, according to a report from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

Wheeles, public information officer for the Indiana State Police Post at Versailles, said Gibson was westbound on U.S. 50 when the gold 2001 Honda Accord she was driving crossed the center line into the path of an eastbound 2011 Chevrolet Malibu driven by Destiny Gerringer, 24, also of North Vernon. Both vehicles came to rest in the eastbound lane of U.S. 50.

Gerringer was treated at the scene by Jennings County Emergency Medical Services for serious injuries before being taken to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis.

Wheeles said frozen precipitation was falling around the time of the wreck, reported shortly before 8 a.m.

He also said road conditions were icy, leading police to believe that was a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation by the post’s crash reconstruction team. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash.

Trooper Matt Holley, who initially investigated the wreck, was assisted by the Jennings County Coroner’s Office and officers with the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department and Spencer Township volunteer firefighters.
