Fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders from the Seymour area competed in the 22nd annual Math Academic Teams for Hoosiers competition Feb. 22 at Seymour-Redding Elementary School.

Nine teams with up to 20 students from each team participated in the event. Across the state, 577 teams made up of nearly 8,000 students competed.

The math competition is a team concept with no individual winners. Each of the four rounds consists of three team members working on eight problems while competing against teams from other schools.

Each problem is graded immediately, and an individual scoring chart maintains a running team score as the evening progresses.

Hope Elementary School placed first in the Blue Class, and Southwestern Elementary School placed first in the Green Class.

In the Orange Class, Seymour-Jackson Elementary School placed first, Seymour-Redding Elementary School was second and Margaret R. Brown Elementary School finished third.

In the Red Class, Emerson Elementary School placed first, Cortland Elementary School was second and Immanuel Lutheran School finished third.

Cortland Elementary School also won the Yellow Class.

The competition is administered by the Indiana Association of School Principals Department of Student Programs and is an attempt to emphasize the importance of mathematics in upper elementary grades.

Statewide results are available online at iasp.org by choosing the Student Programs tab, then Academic Competitions, followed by M.A.T.H. Bowl.
