BROWNSTOWN

Brownstown Central built up a 20-point lead through three quarters to defeat Trinity Lutheran 73-58.

The Braves, behind a pair of 3-point baskets by Cameron Luedeman, opened up a 11-0 lead at the 5:50 mark.

The Cougars, led by Jacob Rowe, rallied to wipe out most of the Braves’ lead. Rowe had four 3-pointers to help the Cougars outscore the Braves 16-8 to trail 19-18 with 30 seconds left in the first quarter.

“We talked about turnovers. They’ve become an issue,” Braves coach Dave Benter said. “We took some bad shots in the second quarter and late in the first quarter, and we quit scoring the ball.

“When we can set up our defense, we can guard, and that is our strength. When we start turning the ball over and taking some bad shots, that led to some transition baskets, ball recovery and driving opportunities for them. (Jacob) Rowe got hot.”

Brownstown (13-4) led 20-18 at the end of the opening period before beginning the second quarter on a 7-0 run to build its lead to 27-18 on a basket by Michael Boshears at the 5:20 mark.

Trinity, sparked by 3-pointers by A.J. Goecker and Josiah Foster, outscored the Braves 8-6 over the final 4:23 of the period to trail 33-26 at the break.

Boshears topped the Braves in scoring in the first half with 14 points, while Rowe scored 14 for Trinity.

Hayden Kinsler came off the bench to score four points and pull down four rebounds for the Braves in the second period.

“I thought Hayden and Seth (Borden) were both active on the backboards,” Benter said.

Luedeman had three 3s for nine points, while Goecker had seven points in the first half.

Brownstown shot 13-for-37, while Trinity was 9-for 22 from the floor in the first half.

The Braves started out hot at the beginning of the second half, as Boshears made a 3-pointer and Luedeman followed with a layup to make it a 38-26 score.

After Tyler Goecker scored a basket for the Cougars, Luedeman scored three straight field goals for the Braves to give his team a 49-29 lead with four minutes left in the quarter.

Boshears had 11 points in the third quarter, as the Braves outscored the Cougars 26-13 to lead 59-39 going into the fourth quarter.

After Kinsler opened the fourth-quarter scoring with a 3-pointer, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to trail 62-46 on a 3-pointer by Rowe with 4:20 remaining.

Boshears topped the Braves with 23 points, Luedeman scored 19 and Kinsler 10, and Borden was high rebounder with 11.

Jacob Rowe (6-13) was high scorer with 22 points, Tyler Goecker scored 11 and A.J. Goecker was high rebounder with 10.

Trinity will travel to Christian Academy on Thursday night, and Brownstown Central will host Bedford North Lawrence on Friday night.
