Owls buried by Olympians’ hot shooting

COLUMBUS

The combined 28 points between Seymour basketball players Ty McCory and Alan Perry was not enough for the Owls to overcome Columbus East in Wednesday’s Hoosier Hills Conference battle.

McCory and Perry both ended up with 14 points, but the Olympians 3-point shooting was just too much for Seymour to handle. East shot 10 of 15 from deep on the way to ending its three-game losing streak with a 73-53 win.

“We just let them play horse out there,” Seymour coach Tyler Phillips said. “When you’re just allowing them to sit there and shoot, high school (Class) 4A basketball players are going to knock down shots.”

Perry opened the game with eight points in the first quarter and ended the half with 12 to try and keep the Owls (6-7, 1-4) in the hunt. East’s 23-point first quarter on five made 3-pointers left Seymour with a 10-point deficit to start the second.

Perry didn’t score on any field goals in the second quarter but hit all four of his free-throws.

“That’s what Alan has to do for us to have a chance to be successful,” Phillips said. “He’s got to go to the rim and make plays. When he graduates, he’s going to have 12 varsity letters (from football, basketball and baseball) and there is a reason for it.”

McCory’s three 3-pointers in the first half helped keep the Olympian lead to single digits, with the score 34-27 at the half. McCory ended with four 3-point baskets.

Perry slowed down in the final two quarters, scoring just two more points, and East did not miss from 3-point range in the last 16 minutes.

The Olympians (6-6, 1-2) jumped out to a 52-36 lead to start the fourth. Zach Moore scored six of his 10 points in the third quarter for Seymour, while Tiller Cummings scored all six of his points in the fourth, but it was not enough to catch up to East. Cummings also led the Owls with eight rebounds.

“We have to watch this film and look at our effort, or lack of it,” Phillips said. “We have to make sure that we’re locked in for 32 minutes of the game plan and that we have five guys on the floor on the floor willing to execute it.”
