Seymour came out strong in the third quarter to outscore Charlestown 19-4 and post a 63-48 win on the Pirates floor Friday night.

“I liked the way we responded in the second half,” Seymour coach Tyler Phillips said. “We came out flat. We didn’t come out ready to play. They got their butts chewed at half time, and they answered the call.”

Neither team could take control of the game in the opening period, resulting in a 12-11 lead for the Pirates.

Ty MCory and Alan Perry did all scoring, with McCory driving for layups and he hit a 3-pointer while Perry converted a pair of three-point plays.

The Owls came out hot at the start of the second period by going on an 8-0 run. Zach Moore started the rally with a jump shot in the lane, Max Otte scored on a move to the basket and Moore added two more buckets for a 19-12 lead at 4:50.

McCory made two 3-pointers to help the Owls increase their lead to 27-14 with 2:55 remaining.

The Pirates, sparked by a pair of 3-pointers and a 2-point field goal, cut Seymour lead at 33-29 at the half.

The Owls scored the first seven points of the third quarter to lead 40-29 on two field goals by Eddie Louden.

Perry was hot throughout the quarter with three baskets and 4-for-4 for 10 points as the Owls increased their lead to 52-33.

Perry topped the Owls in scoring with 18 points. McCory, who scored 25 points in Seymour’s win at Switzerland County, followed up with 14 points, and Cummings scored 10 to go along with 9 rebounds.

“Everybody that stepped on the floor did a really nice job on both ends of the floor,” Phillips said.  “I thought it was a team effort.”

The Owls held a 21-14 advantage in rebounds.

Bo Braunecker topped the Pirates (2-10) with 13 points and Ty Crace added 11.

The Owls (5-4) shot 24 for 48 from the floor, while the Pirates made 20 of 35.

The Owls take a 2-game win streak into tonight’s home game with Bloomington North.

“We’re getting there,” Phillips said. “Every night’s a glorified practice. Every time we step on the floor we’re getting better.”
