Thumbs-Up, Thumbs-Down – December 29

More than giving

Thumbs-up to the members of Holly Birdsong’s fourth-grade class at Cortland Elementary School. Instead of exchanging $5 gifts for Christmas, the students collected toys, crayons, markers, coloring books and Play-Doh for gift bags they then delivered to the pediatrics department on the third floor of the Seymour hospital.

Thumbs-up to members of the Seymour High School Key Club for putting together 48 Home Sweet Home kits to be distributed to families successfully completing the eight-week program at Anchor House in Seymour and for sponsoring an “angel tree” for the Sertoma Club of Jackson County’s 45th annual Christmas Miracle. Club members collected names of children for whom to purchase presents and ended up with a total of 45 “angels.”

Thumbs-up to everyone at Brownstown Central Middle School for raising about $6,500 to buy toys, clothing and other items for less-fortunate children in the school district and the students at Brownstown Elementary School for collecting 3,746 in canned goods and other non-perishable items. All of the items were distributed through the annual Brownstown Christmas Cheer, a program that has been in place since at least the early 1950s.

Thumbs-up to members of the Crothersville FFA chapter, Crothersville-Vernon Township Volunteer Fire Department and other volunteers in the community who delivered tons of food and toys to 69 families in Vernon Township during the 29th annual Crothersville FFA Toy and Food Drive.

Thumbs-up to Seymour High School cheerleaders Grace Rueger, Kaylyn Stidham and Harka Janet Taguchi, who will be among the more than 650 high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the United States representing Varsity Spirit in the London New Year’s Day Parade. Those invited to perform in the parade qualified for the trip after being selected as an All-American at various summer camp.

Acts of kindness

Thumbs-up to the three customers who made my work better on Christmas day by their acts of kindness.

No call list

Thumbs-down to people who call police to help resolve disputes and issues with family and neighbors. In most cases, police shouldn’t be involved in ironing out what are often trivial problems.

No parking zone

Thumbs-down to motorists who opt to park in handicapped parking spaces without a permit to do so.
