Trinity Lutheran’s girls scored the first eight points of Wednesday night’s game against Borden and led all the way for a 72-29 win in the Bollinger Athletic Complex on Wednesday.

Savannah Harweger had a hot hand early for the Cougars as her fourth basket of the game gave the home team the 8-0 lead with 5:30 left in the first quarter.

Cougars coach Mike Lang said he liked the way his team started the game.

“We wanted to come out with pressure to put on them,” he said. “We started out in a 2-2-1 press and fell right back into a trapping 2-3 zone. We just wanted to put traps on them everywhere we could go.

“They knocked a couple of shots down and I told the girls before the game we’re going to give some open looks up because we’re trying pressure If they pass out of it.”

The Braves had eight of their 20 turnovers in the first quarter. Trinity had only six turnovers for the game.

Harweger had six baskets for 12 points in the opening period. The Cougars shot 10-for-20 and the Braves were 2-for-7 shooting in the opening period.

Maddie Bell opened the second period with a 3-pointer, and Savanna Setty followed with a short jumper to boost Trinity’s lead to 25-6, and Harweger added two more field goals in the period to help the Cougars to a 32-12 lead at the half.

Trinity shot 15 for 33 and Borden shot 4 for 18 in the first half.

Harweger and Abby Hackman each had 3 baskets in the third quarter, when the Cougars outscored the Braves 17-5 to take a 51-17 lead into the fourth quarter.

Harweger scored a game-high 24 points, Delaney Maschino scored 12, and Hackman finished with 10, and had 16 rebounds.

“Harweger played aggressive,” Lang said. “She read everything tonight. I go back and I look at the pass she made to Piper Acton after a made free throw, and just her recognition tonight (was good). I told the coaches I think she had her hands on every loose ball available. She created havoc. She did a great job.”

Josie Voyle was high scorer for Borden with 10 points.

The Cougars (4-1) will travel to Southwestern (Shelby) on Saturday for a varsity only game starting at noon.
