Love of the game

Andrea Axsom said one of the things she likes about playing golf is that it is different than any other sport.

“It’s very different every time you play. It can be a good day or a bad day. It just depends,” she said. “Practice is a very important part. You have to stay consistent with every part of your game, especially your short game, so it’s important that you’re getting that at all times.”

Axsom began playing golf in seventh grade before playing in the varsity line up for a couple matches her freshman year.

Since, she has been a varsity regular the past three years.

Axsom said this year she began the season in the No. 2 position and has stayed there throughout.

“Coming in from my junior year to senior year that’s when I controlled doing one shot at a time, rather than focusing on the score,” Axsom said. “That’s my biggest improvement.”

The senior enjoys the home matches, and said her lowest score at Shadowood has been a 43.

“Shadowood is a great course,” Axsom said. “I know it very well. I like the front nine better. It seems simpler. The par 3s are a lot shorter.”

On the course, Axsom said staying positive is important.

“You just have to make sure you hit every shot the best you can,” she said. “You can’t think about the score. That’s one thing I’ve done this year that I haven’t done in previous years, is just a completely different approach of getting that one shot the way you think you can.”

She said two of her more memorable matches have come this season when she earned medalist honors early in the season by scoring a 40 against New Albany at Valley View, and she was involved in a four-way tie for medalist honors in a match against Brownstown Central at Shadowood Aug. 28 by shooting a 47.

Axsom said her tournament low has been a 93 in the Seymour Invitational on Aug. 2.

The sectional will be Saturday at Otis Park in Bedford.

“We play there more than any other away course, so we’re pretty comfortable with that,” Axsom said. “When we had our match there I shot 45. That was the lowest nine holes I’ve shot there. It’s fun to play on different courses.

She prefers to play early-morning matches.

“It’s usually better to play in the mornings, usually more comfortable temperatures. I like the cooler weather.

“You always have to pay attention to the wind if it’s coming toward you, or even if it’s going toward the pin you want to make sure it’s not going to carry it past where you want it to.”

Axsom has enjoyed her time at Seymour.

“I’ll remember the competition,” Axsom said. “Even when you connect with an opponent you still get to know those people too.”

“There’s a lot of pride in the school.”
