With 2-minutes, 28-seconds remaining, Maddie Bell came up in the clutch for Trinity Lutheran’s girls soccer team Tuesday.

Trailing down the middle of the field, Bell took an outside pass from Sidney Hoene and buried it from 16-yards to help give the Cougars a 3-2 win against Greenwood Christian Academy.

Trinity (3-5) controlled the pace of the game from the opening whistle.

The Cougars took a 1-0 lead with 29:44 in the first half when Bell passed a through ball to Hoene, from about 10 yards, which would find the back of the net.

About six minutes later, Hoene scored her second goal of the night off a cross by Flossie Cooper.

A cross by Cooper found Hoene’s foot in the middle of the box, and Hoene scored on a shot that sailed past a defender and GCA’s keeper.

Cougars coach Jeff Nolting said it’s important for this year’s team to build early advantages.

“We’ve got to get out in front,” he said. “We’re not a from-behind team. It’s big for this team to get the early jump. It gives them confidence. The girls came out knowing they could win against this team.”

GCA cut their deficit to one, at the 11:57-mark, when Cameron Northern slotted a shot to the far post past Cougars’ keeper Genesis Munoz.

The game tied with 37:22 remaining, as Northern poked a shot into the net from about 8 yards.

Munoz came up with a big save, at 10:44, by punching a shot away from net while diving.

Neither team would created many offensive opportunities until Bell’s goal in the waning minutes.

The Cougars were outshot 12-8 in the game.

In goal, Munoz collected 10 saves for the Cougars.

Going into the game, Nolting said the team made some lineups adjustments that paid off.

“We made some lineup changes tonight — moving Sidney up top and Flossy in the center,” he said. “We’ve had Emma Goecker in that spot. Flossy had really good touches, she is probably also the best passer on the team. She can deliver a ball to a foot, which is important to us.”

Trinity will host Brown County on Thursday.
