The Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society is sponsoring the 14th annual Fall River “Shady” Sweep on Oct.  7 in memory of the group’s founder, Dan Shade.

Volunteers will have the opportunity to canoe a section of the Muscatatuck River or walk along its bank in the North Vernon and Vernon areas of Jennings County while collecting trash and contributing positively to the environment and community.

Everyone is welcome to participate. A parent or other responsible adult must accompany small children. Participants should dress in clothing appropriate for outdoor work and relative to the current weather conditions.

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Vernon Commons off of Jackson Street in Vernon. A brief safety instruction, equipment distribution and group location assignments will be conducted before going to the river sweep locations. Participants interested in canoeing during the cleanup must provide their own canoe.

Participants will conclude their day at noon at North Vernon City Park, Shelter House 1, where lunch will be provided from food donated by local businesses.
