Unemployment rate takes a dive down

Jackson County’s unemployment rate of 2.6 percent in June was down from 3.9 percent during the same month a year earlier, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce’s report.

Overall, the number of people on the job in June grew by 712 to people 22,673, compared to 21,961 in June 2016. The number of people reporting they were looking for work in June was 609, down from 880 in June a year earlier.

The state’s unemployment rate was 3.1 in June, while the nation’s rate was 4.5.

Jackson County was tied for the fourth lowest rate in the state with Boone, Hendricks, Johnson, Marshall, Rush, Steuben, White and Whitley counties.

Elkhart, Dubois and Adams counties had the lowest rate in the state in June at 2.3, and Howard County had the highest at 4.9 percent.

The rates and rankings for other counties in the south central part of the state are Bartholomew, 2.4 percent (86th); Brown, 2.9 percent (51nd); Washington, 3.1 percent (45th); Jennings, 3.2 (37th); Scott, 2.6 (30th); Monroe, 3.6 percent (17th);and Lawrence, 3.8 (11th).
