Two local athletes showcased their talents in the Girls Underclass Showcase on Tuesday at Ben Davis.

Junior Makenna Fee of Seymour and sophomore Ashley Schroer of Brownstown Central played three games each against some of the top girls basketball talent across the state. This was both Schroer and Fee’s first time participating in the event.

Fee played on the White team alongside Columbus North’s Chelsi Giesige, but there were many new faces. The White team finished with a 2-1 record, and Fee said she was happy with how the day went for her.

“I thought it was a really good experience for me,” Fee said. “I’m excited I came. I learned, ‘Don’t get down on yourself, and just try to pick everyone else up with you.’ We’re all not going to have the best game we want every game.”

Schroer’s Red team finished the day winless in three close games, but she said she still enjoyed herself and had lots of fun playing. The key points she took away from the experience to get better was to keep working hard and communicating on the court.

“It’s kind of a new experience,” Schroer said. “But I think it made me a better player.”

Participating in the showcase helps give exposure to the up-and-coming athletes. There were a number of small college coaches and scouts watching the event.

“My favorite part is just getting to know the other girls from the teams,” Fee said. “… It helps whenever I do get back to school, adjusting and seeing how things are going to go and who we are going to play against.”
