Alcohol and speeding likely played a role in the death of a 27-year-old man killed in a crash late Monday night on U.S. 31 near Commiskey Pike, police report.

Robert Robbins of Seymour was pronounced dead at the scene of the wreck by Jackson County Coroner Michael Bobb, according to a news release from Sgt. Stephen Wheeles with the Indiana State Police Versailles Post.

Wheeles, the post’s public information officer, said the initial investigation by Trooper Korry Clark indicates that Robbins was driving a 2004 Mazda 6 north on U.S. 31 when he failed to navigate a sharp curve in the road near the Interstate 65 overpass just west of Commiskey Pike.

Robbins sustained fatal injuries after he was ejected from the vehicle after it left the road and struck a guardrail, Wheeles said.

He said police believe speed and alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, reported to police at about 11 p.m. Robbins also was not wearing a seat belt, police said.
