Flying high: Area team wins first place overall at annual home meet

Seymour Gymnastics Center conducted its annual home meet Jan. 14 at Girls Inc. of Jackson County in Seymour.

Competing in Seymour Cup 2017 were 169 gymnasts from across Indiana. Around 400 spectators came to support gymnasts for the four sessions running from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Seymour Gymnastics Center team Xcel Silver won first place overall. Team members are Claire Combs, Grace Maddox, Kalli Napier, Jaidyn Nichols and Alex Weaver.

Individual results for Seymour were:

Grace Furlow, Level 8, placed first on vault and bars, second on floor, third on beam and second all-around.

Autumn Bontrager, Xcel Diamond, placed first on beam, vault, floor and bars.

Paige Smith, Xcel Platinum, placed first on beam and bars, second on vault and first all-around in the 10-and-over age group.

Alex Weaver, Xcel Silver, placed first on floor, vault and bars and first all-around in the 11-and-over age group.

Jaidyn Nichols, Xcel Silver, placed second on beam and floor and second all-around in the 11-and-over age group.

Kalli Napier, Xcel Silver, placed first on bars, second on beam and floor, third on vault and first all-around in the 10-and-under age group.

Claire Combs, Xcel Silver, placed second on vault, first on floor and fourth all-around in the 10-and-under age group.

Grace Maddox, Xcel Silver, placed fourth on beam, fifth on vault and bars, seventh on floor and fifth all-around in the 10-and-under age group.

Laci Szarvas, Seymour Gymnastics Center’s head coach, said he was pleased with the results from the meet. He has coached at Seymour Gymnastics Center for 20 years.

Athletics Director Missy Perry said the combined efforts of the gymnasts, coaches, team parents, staff, community support and volunteers made it a very successful event.
