James E. Speer, 83, of Seymour, passed away at 1:08 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Born June 25, 1933, in Bedford, he was the son of Nolan and Alma Edith Cummings Speer, both of whom preceded him in death. On Sept. 9, 1950, in Bedford, he married Loretta M. Seidle Speer, who preceded him in death.

Jim was a member of Trinity Pentecostal Church, where he played the guitar for more than 40 years in the church band. He was a very active family man, and he loved to hunt, fish and travel with his wife and family. He enjoyed working in the yard and on cars.

He retired after 43 years of service in the sand lab department at Golden Foundry in Columbus.

Survivors include six children, Charlene (Duane) Darlage, Barb (Frank) Maschino, Jim (Debbie) Speer Jr., Bradford Speer, Wally Speer and Nathan (Candy) Speer; 12 grandchildren, Becki (Daryl) Short, Gina Darlage, Rachel (Rodney) Wagoner, Jenni Metz, James Speer III, Sara (Austin Jackson) Speer, Brad Speer Jr., Mick Speer, Abby Speer, Audrey Speer, Nolan Speer and Faithe Petty; and six great-grandchildren, Jordan Ellis, Logan Overshiner, Reid Darlage, Dustin Metz, Rylee Jackson and Carsen Jackson; brother, Kenneth (Betty) Speer, two sisters; Sharon (Ron) Schrader and Karen (Leroy) Davis; stepbrothers, Kenneth Hughes, Don (Lucille) Hughes and Bob (Lillian) Hughes; and stepsisters, Jean (David) Trusley and Carol (Chuck) Clark.

Besides his wife of 64 year and his parents, he was preceded in death by his half sister, Betty Dalton and stepbrother, Glen Hughes.

The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Voss and Sons Funeral Service with the Rev. Larry Dalton and the Rev. Marty Speer officiating. Burial will be at Leesville Cemetery in Lawrence County.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today and from noon until time of service Sunday at the funeral home.
