James “Jim” Thomas Benson, 75, of Brownstown, passed away at 11:08 a.m. Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, at Hoosier Christian Village.

Born May 21, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio, he was the son of Marlen “Bozo” Benson and Betty Frances Barnes Benson, both of whom preceded him in death. On May 23, 1970, at Tampico Christian Church, he married Ethel Maxie, who survives in Brownstown.

James was a U.S. Air Force veteran who entered the service Nov. 7, 1963, and was honorably discharged Nov. 25, 1965, as an airman first class. He retired from Cummins Engine Co. in 1996 after 33 years of employment and worked for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources at Starve Hollow Lake for nine years. He was a member of Brownstown Christian Church, where he was an elder and deacon. He served as an elder, deacon and Sunday school teacher at Crothersville Christian Church and attended Tampico Christian Church. He enjoyed singing in the church choir, was an editor-in-chief for the Hoosier Christian Village Voice monthly newsletter and was president of the resident council.

Other survivors include a son, John David Benson of Brooklyn, New York; and a sister-in-law, Deloris Benson.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Joseph Benson.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tampico Christian Church with a luncheon to follow the service.

Entombment will be in columbarium at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison at a later date.
