Two Harrison County men were arrested Sunday afternoon near Seymour after a traffic stop that led to the discovery of 15 grams of methamphetamine and 90 grams of marijuana, police report.

Tod Dean Mertz Jr., 28, and Joshua Allen Dewitt, 24, both of Corydon, each face charges of dealing in methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony; dealing in marijuana and possession of methamphetamine, both Level 6 felonies; and possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors.

The pair were arrested by Indiana State Police Trooper Randel Miller after he stopped a 2001 Honda Civic being driven south by Mertz on Interstate 65 near the 51-mile marker, according to a news release from Indiana State Police Sgt. Stephen Wheeles.

During the stop, which occurred shortly after 1 p.m., Miller said he became suspicious of possible criminal activity involving Mertz and Dewitt and used his dog, Jinx, to search the exterior of the car, said Wheeles, who is public information officer for the Versailles Post.

After the dog alerted to possible drugs inside the vehicle, Miller said he searched the vehicle and found approximately 15 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 90 grams of suspected marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Both men were booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown and were being held without bond Tuesday pending initial appearances in Jackson Circuit Court, Wheeles said.

Sgt. Brian Wilson with the Indiana State Police and Officer Bart Bevers with the Seymour Police Department assisted with the stop and search of the vehicle at the southbound weigh station.
