FREETOWN

Herschel “Roscoe” Bowman, 76, of Freetown, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at his residence.

Born Dec. 11, 1940, in Lawrence County, he was the son of Arnold J. and Agnes Roberts Bowman, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 14, 1967, he married Carolyn McCrary, who survives in Freetown.

Herschel was a member of Ratcliff Grove Christian Church and retired from Cummins Engine Co. after 30 years of service. He enjoyed running his beagle hound dogs, fishing, horseback riding and farming.

Survivors include a son, Rick (Rita) Bowman of Brownstown; three daughters, Kathy J. (Jeff) Mains of Terre Haute; Sheri Lynn (Jerry) Johnson of Seymour and Christy M. (Patrick) O’Donnell of Brownstown; two sisters, Dana C. (Ron) Hobson of Seymour and Anna L. (Duane) Gee of Bedford; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Mains, and a niece, Melanie Hobson.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Spurgeon Funeral Home Inc. in Brownstown, with Pastor Mark Morecraft officiating. Interment will be at White River Valley Cemetery at Medora.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. until time of service Saturday.
