Police: Meth dealer arrested

Police have arrested a man they say is a mid-level drug dealer who traveled to Louisville multiple times a week to buy methamphetamine to sell locally.

The arrest of Donald J. Gerth, 46, of Seymour, on Wednesday is part of a strategy by Seymour Police to target dealers and disrupt the distribution of drugs in Seymour, Detective Cpl. Brian Moore said.

After serving a search warrant around 2:30 p.m. at Gerth’s residence at 336 Central Park Ave. in Village Green Mobile Home Park, police found about a quarter ounce of meth, controlled substances including pills and numerous devices used for smoking meth, Moore said.

Moore said the arrest is the result of a six-month investigation.

“We had conducted numerous controlled purchases from him and discovered he had ties to local individuals that had ties to Louisville,” Moore said.

Those individuals, Roger Winchester of New Albany, Mark Winchester and Kendra Jenkins of Austin and Brandon Morgan of Stinnett, Kentucky, recently were arrested in Seymour on drug charges too.

“They got arrested, so (Gerth) started to go to Louisville,” he said. “Money is the driving force. He was traveling three to five times a week to Louisville and picking it up from an individual there.”

By stopping local dealers, police said they hope to cut the supply of methamphetamine and heroin coming here from Louisville, Cincinnati and Indianapolis.

Gerth was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 7:52 p.m. Wednesday on three counts of dealing in meth.

Moore said others are involved in the drug distribution route from Louisville to this area and he expects several more arrests to be carried out.

“We’ve been working hard on this and hopefully can continue to keep cleaning this up and getting these drugs off our streets and out of our neighborhoods,” Moore said.

Also assisting in the investigation were Detective Crystal Schapson, and officers Jacob Florine, Tim Toborg, Chadd Rogers and Brian Proffet.
