Center of attention: Brownstown lineman directs offense up front

The biggest player on Brownstown Central’s football team leads by example.

Senior Clark Hauer, listed at 6-foot-3 and 270 pounds, directs the line as the center while also harassing opposing offenses in the defensive tackle position.

Hauer has started for the Braves the past two seasons and saw time as a backup in his sophomore year.

He won sectionals with the Braves in 2013 and 2015.

The senior starting playing football in Brownstown’s 56ers program. He loved it so much he hasn’t missed a fall on the gridiron since.

On offense, Hauer dictates play before snapping the ball.

“I make sure the offensive line knows the defense,” Hauer said. “I need to make the right calls in case the defensive line shifts. The biggest thing is just maintaining the blocks.”

While there’s not a lot of glory on the line, Hauer said that the group is tight-knit.

“We absolutely take pride in what we do,” Hauer said. “I like being with a bunch of good guys. We bond together and know that the offense can’t score without us. I like playing offense better than defense because I feel like I have more experience on that side of the ball.”

In the middle, Hauer has helped the Braves earn 2,025 yards of offense through five games.

On the D-line, Hauer has five tackles and a sack thus far in 2016.

Hauer is a one-sport athlete by choice.

“I wanted to just focus on football,” Hauer said. “It’s the sport I’m the best at, so I focus on that.”

Outside of football, Hauer said he enjoys spending time with his close friends and helping with his dad’s power excavation business.

“I’m going to miss the bond the most,” Hauer said of when the season is finished. “Everyone here is pretty close. Everybody knows each other. It’s a tight-knit group.”

Hauer plans on continuing his football career after graduation from the Braves’ program.

“I like football a lot and don’t want it to end after high school. I want to keep playing. I think I’m going to go to a smaller (NCAA) Division III school somewhere.”

He said he plans to study business, marketing or engineering.
