Two people were injured Friday in a jet ski accident on a private lake near Brownstown.

Joshua Smith, 24, of Greenwood, was severely injured after crashing a personal watercraft at the Lake and Forest Club, according to a news release from Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

A passenger on the jet ski, Bridget Smith, 23, of Clayton, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. She is not related to Joshua Smith, police said.

Both were airlifted to local hospitals as a result of their injuries.

Police said just before 8:30 p.m., witnesses observed Joshua Smith traveling at a high rate of speed on a Honda personal watercraft with Bridget Smith seated at the rear.

The jet ski struck a dock and both Joshua Smith and Bridget Smith were ejected, police reported.

Lake and Forest residents who heard or witnessed the collision, one of whom was a medical doctor, quickly rushed to the scene to help Joshua Smith, who was found floating face down and unresponsive in the water, according to police reports.

Alcohol is believed to have been a contributing factor, police said, and the incident remains under investigation by Indiana Conservation Officers.

Assisting agencies at the scene included Jackson County EMS, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and Brownstown Police.
