Volunteers sought for farmers market

Volunteers and musical performers are needed to help at the Seymour Area Farmers Market this season.

With several changes being made this year to help grow the market into a community event, organizers are expecting to have more vendors and bigger crowds on the two designated market days — from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays.

The market will open May 28 in the Walnut Street Parking Lot.

Duties for volunteers will include helping set up and tear down after each market, helping pedestrians at crosswalks, monitoring handicap parking, assisting customers to their vehicles, filling in at vendor booths to cover for restroom breaks and providing information on how to use Sprout Bucks, WIC vouchers, the Indiana Senior Farmers Market Nutrition program and SNAP benefits for low-income families to make purchases.

A total of four volunteers are needed on Saturdays and two on Wednesdays.

Some volunteers also will be needed to help work at the market’s new Buck a Book wagon. The mobile used book sale is a joint fundraiser between the market and the Friends of the Jackson County Public Library. A variety of books, both fiction and non-fiction for adults and children, will be sold for $1 or less. Profits will be split to support the farmers market and the library.

Local musicians also are being sought to perform during market hours to entertain shoppers and help make the market a gathering place.

Soloists, duets, small ensembles or small bands are needed to fill 30-minute slots June 18, July 16, Aug. 20, Sept. 17 and Oct. 15.

By performing at the market, budding musicians can gain experience, network and earn money by selling CDs and merchandise. The market also can be used by local music teachers wanting to showcase their students publicly.
