Local students have until Friday to submit applications for the Rumpke Medora Landfill Scholarship, which recognizes environmental stewardship.

Each year, one graduating high school senior in Jackson County is selected for the scholarship.

Applicants must reside in the county, demonstrate high academic standards and extracurricular achievements and plan to attend an accredited college or university. Applications are available at each school’s guidance office.

Owned and operated by Rumpke since 1983, the Medora Landfill currently accepts about 1,100 tons of municipal solid waste and construction and demolition debris daily. The landfill earned an environmental stewardship award from the Association of Indiana Solid Waste Management Districts in 2011.

Rumpke is a privately owned residential and commercial waste and recycling firm providing service to areas of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia.
