River cleanup day planned

The Friends of the Muscatatuck River Society will be organizing the 15th annual spring river cleanup April 23.

During the event, volunteers may canoe or walk a section of the Muscatatuck River or walk along its bank while collecting trash and contributing positively to the environment and community.

The seventh annual event also is known as Kevin’s Kleanup in memory of Kevin Jayne, former president of the society.

Registration is at 8 a.m. at the Vernon Commons, located off Jackson Street in Vernon. A brief safety instruction, equipment distribution and group location assignments will be conducted before going to the river sweep locations. Participants interested in canoeing during the cleanup must provide their own canoe.

Everyone is welcome to participate. Small children need to be accompanied by a parent or responsible adult. All are encouraged to dress in clothing appropriate for outdoor work and weather conditions.

Participants will conclude their day at noon at the North Vernon City Park Shelter House 3, where lunch will be provided from food donated by local businesses.
