Gerald J. Pottschmidt, 84, of Seymour, passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016, at Lutheran Community Home in Seymour.

Born March 6, 1932, in Seymour, he was the son of Lawrence and Carrie Otte Pottschmidt, both of whom preceded him in death. On July 14, 1957, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Seymour, he married Nancy Frey, who preceded him in death.

Gerald was a charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he served on various committees and sang with the choir for many years. He graduated from Shields High School, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and worked his entire life as a farmer.

When he was younger, he worked with his brothers, Ervin and Henry, in heavy equipment construction, then went to work at E&G Construction for many years. He loved to putter around the farm and liked taking breaks throughout the day. He enjoyed driving his 1982 Datsun 280 and his red Corvette.

Survivors include three sons, Andy Pottschmidt, Khris Pottschmidt and Steven (Beth) Pottschmidt; a daughter, Anna (Jim) Pratt; and six grandchildren, Nicholas, Ava, Kourtney and Whitney Pottschmidt and Abbey and Sam Pratt.

Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Ervin Pottschmidt.

The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Voss Chapel in Seymour. Burial will follow at Riverview Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from noon until time of service Thursday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Immanuel Lutheran School Scholarship Fund, Trinity Lutheran School Scholarship Fund or the Pratt Family Scholarship Fund.
