COLUMBUS — Moments after sitting down in the bleachers following her floor exercise routine at the Columbus East Regional, Seymour sophomore Kellsye Warner said she could live with her performance, no matter the end result.
“I felt like I did good,” Warner stated at the time, “so if I don’t go to state, I know it ended well.”
Warner’s score of 9.225 was sitting fifth at the time, with Columbus East’s gymnasts still to compete. When the Olympians’ Adi Minor and Andrea Stattenfield both posted better numbers, Warner was left with a seventh-place finish — one spot away from reaching the state meet.
Owen Valley’s Anna Watkin took first on the floor with a 9.75, while Minor — who won the all-around title — was second at 9.675. Sixth place went to Claire Thompson of team champion Columbus North, who scored a 9.325.
Warner said she wasn’t rattled at all going into her first regional meet, saying it felt the same as the sectionals, which had also been held at Columbus East.
It was simply a matter of executing her routine well, which Warner felt she did.
“My leap wasn’t good at all, really,” she conceded, “but my tumbling passes were good.”
