Planning council to give snapshot of homeless count

A “Point in Time” homeless count is planned to give area agencies a snapshot of the number of homeless people in Jackson and other nearby counties.

The Region 11 Planning Council’s count Thursday will detail where homeless people slept Wednesday night. The count determines the amount of funding Region 11 receives for shelter and permanent housing programs.

Region 11 includes Jackson, Bartholomew, Brown, Decatur, Jennings, Johnson and Shelby counties.

Sites have been set up in each county for the homeless count and to distribute care packages. Those who are homeless or anyone who knows someone who is homeless can call United Way of Bartholomew County’s 2-1-1 service or 812-376-6666 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for information.
