Owls claim share of conference title

JEFFERSONVILLE — The Seymour girls basketball team will take at least a share of the Hoosier Hills Conference title in 2016.

On Tuesday, the Owls defeated Jeffersonville 46-36 to stay undefeated in the HHC at 6-0.

The Owls fell behind 14-13 after the first eight minutes of play but took a 27-23 advantage into the half.

Neither team could find the bottom of the basket in the third quarter, as the Owls outscored the Red Devils 8-4.

Seymour held on in the fourth by limiting the Red Devils to nine points.

Kayla Griffin led the Owls with 10 points, and Sarah Benefiel added seven.

Bedford North Lawrence defeated Columbus East to move to 5-1 in HHC play on Tuesday, so if Seymour (16-4, 6-0 HHC) wins at New Albany in the regular-season finale on Jan. 28, they will be sole conference champions.

“What we did tonight means we guaranteed ourselves a share of the HHC, and I think it says a lot about our kids,” Owls coach Jason Longmeier said.

Tigers fall in fourth

AUSTIN — The Crothersville girls basketball team was limited to four points in the fourth quarter at Austin on Tuesday, which resulted in a 47-41 loss.

The game was tight early as the Tigers took a 9-8 lead after one quarter.

Austin outscored the Tigers 12-11 before halftime to retake control.

Crothersville came out in the second half strong and led 37-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

Abby Jewell led the Tigers with 11 points, while Katrina Christian and Alexis Adair each recorded 10.

The Tigers (10-9) will host Class A No. 1 Springs Valley on Saturday.
