Go take a hike on New Year’s Day

Usher in 2016 with other outdoor lovers at one of the many First Day Hikes offered New Year’s Day at Indiana’s state parks and other properties.

The hikes are a healthy way to start 2016 and a chance to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and connect with friends, according to a news release from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.

The department’s Division of State Parks plans to conduct 32 First Day events throughout the state.

Locally, there will be a hike at 11 a.m. at Hardy Lake in Scott County. Participants will meet at the main trailhead across from the beach access road for a hike to The Island. The hike is three miles long and moderately rugged.

There also will be a trail run/walk at 3:30 p.m. at Fairfax State Recreation Area at Lake Monroe near Bloomington. The non-competitive (untimed) trail run/walk will take participants through forest and field. There will be 4-mile and 1.5-mile courses. Information can be found at mag7raceseries.com.
