Seymour teams battle weather, fierce competition at invite

After waiting more than an hour due to lightning, the Seymour cross-country teams competed on a wet course Saturday at the FlashRock Invitational.

Despite the conditions, both teams competed well in one of the biggest meets of the season.

The Owls boys squad finished 25th in the championship race with a score of 678, and the winning team was Hamilton Southeastern, scoring 75.

Senior Tim Molinari led the Owls, finishing in 71st with a time of 17:19, followed by Jacob Voss’ 131st-place finish in 17:58.

Alex Lovins finished 150th in 18:15, Hunter Bauserman clocked 18:31 for 157th and Cooper Morrow ran a 19:12 for 169th.

Other Owls runners were Trent Hohenstreiter (172nd, 19:21) and Barry Huff (173rd, 19:21.6).

Julien Magallenes of Borden won the boys championship run with a time of 15:38 on the 5K course.

Owls boys coach Randy Fife said he was pleased with the boys progression, and he was especially pleased with Molinari, who is healthy and improving with each race.

The Owls girls team finished sixth of 23 squads in the championship run with a score of 184.

The winning team was Carroll (Fort Wayne) with 124 points.

The 13th-ranked girls team was led by sophomore Emma Brock, who finished 14th with a time of 19:15.

Ashton Chase was next for the Owls in 20th with a time of 19:32.

The Owls’ Megan Winter placed 45th in 20:08, Claire Loebker got 49th with a 20:10 and Oriana Morales finished 61st in 20:32.

Non-scorers for the Owls included Abby Voss’ 78th-place finish in 20:52 and Maya Hauersperger’s 122nd-place finish in 22:09.

The Owls beat two higher-ranked teams in the meet, Hamilton Southeastern and Franklin Central.

Owls girls coach Spencer Sunbury was happy with his runners from top to bottom.

“It was a very tough course, but all the girls ran well,” Sunbury said. “Emma nearly had a personal record today.”

The Owls will run in the Silver Creek Invitational on Tuesday, and then compete in the Batesville Invitational the following week.

On Oct. 3, the girls team will host the Hoosier Hills Conference meet at Freeman Field.
