Beards out for Bustock summer music festival

The annual Bustock outdoor summer music festival in Seymour is getting a little hairy this year.

That’s because the four-night event at Southern Indiana Center for the Arts will end Saturday with a performance by Chicago-based ZZ Top tribute band Eliminator and a Best Beards Contest.

The lineup of performers for the festival includes Derick Howard and The Rusty Bladen Band on Wednesday; The IMPROV Band featuring Jill McIntosh King and Mike Gerth and The White Lightning Boys on Thursday; These Fine Gentlemen and the AC/DC tribute band 100% Angus on Friday; and Amy Pierceall and Sean Jennings and Eliminator on Saturday.

Admission is free.

Music starts at 7:30 p.m. each night. In the event of rain, the shows will be moved indoors to the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 on Jackson Park Drive behind Bob Poynter GM in Seymour.

Anyone with a beard can enter the Best Beards Contest with trophies being awarded in several categories, including the Grayest/Whitest, Longest, Weirdest, Best Groomed and Audience Favorite. Sign up for the contest at wjaa.net or at the show.

Kids can get involved by creating their own Bustock beards that night.

The event is organized and sponsored by Radio 96.3 WJAA to promote “peace, fun art and free live music,” WJAA owner and manager Robert Becker said.

Although he’s not sure exactly how many years he has been staging Bustock, Becker said it has been close to 20 years.

It started as a publicity stunt and has turned into a much-loved community event that helps promote local talent, Becker said.

Bustock is for all ages, and people are welcome to bring lawn chairs, blankets and coolers, he added. The arts center is located 2001 N. Ewing St. in Seymour.

Hot dogs, hamburgers and other food will be available for purchase as a fundraiser for Jackson County Special Olympics, and there will be a raffle for an autographed John Mellencamp guitar to raise money for the arts center’s Minutes to Memories flower garden.
