Police seek suspects in thefts from auto dealerships

The Seymour Police Department is investigating a series of incidents Sunday involving two car dealerships.

The incidents were uncovered Monday morning when a red, four-door 2014 Dodge Ram was reported missing from the Bob Poynter Ford dealership on South Jackson Park Drive.

Investigators believe the truck was stolen around 2:45 p.m. Sunday based on video surveillance.

That theft followed the theft of several license plates from the Bob Poynter Chevrolet dealership on East Tipton Street, police reported, Seymour Detective Greg O’Brien said.

Police believe the thefts probably involved the same people, he said.

O’Brien said security cameras caught a man with another suspect walking to the Ford dealership from a store across the street in Jackson Park Shopping Center. Footage also showed the car they were traveling in, which was a Ford-type car with front-end damage.

O’Brien said that same vehicle also was caught on camera when the license plates were being taken from the lot at the Chevrolet dealership.

He said at 2:51 p.m. Sunday, someone had called dispatch to report a suspicious red pickup traveling eastbound on Tipton Street.

The pickup, which was the one taken from the Ford dealership, was covered in snow with the exception of a small spot on the windshield, O’Brien said.

The person reporting that truck said it had just left another dealership on East Tipton Street and eventually went southbound on Interstate 65, O’Brien said.

He said he was not sure why the people in the truck stopped at that dealership but said they might have been looking to steal license plates.

Anyone with information about any of the incidents are urged to call the police.
