Nominations sought for Seymour Wall of Fame

Seymour High School has begun looking for nominations for its Wall of Fame.

This year, the school and community will come together in the fall to celebrate another group of deserving graduates who have made their mark on the world.

The most recent time the school conducted an induction was 2011. At that time, six alumni were bestowed with the honor. They were Dr. William E. Laupus, Herbert H.C. Zumhingst, Sister Mary Luke Jones, Timothy J. Scott, Kathy Hoene Humphrey and Thomas V. Easterday.

Aaron Floyd, dean of students and adviser of the school’s Renaissance program, is handling the ongoing nomination process and induction ceremony, scheduled to take place during football homecoming in September.

“Seymour High School, formerly Shields High School, has a long, proud heritage,” Floyd said. “Many of our graduates have led extremely successful and rewarding professional careers.”

A total of eight classes have been inducted, beginning with the first group in 1996. Notable Wall of Famers include musician John Mellencamp, former U.S. Representative Baron Hill, who is now contemplating a run for Indiana governor, retired Bridgestone of Americas CEO Mark Emkes and physician Dr. Joseph Black.

The Wall of Fame not only recognizes the accomplishments of former students but gives current students role models.

It was started by former high school librarian Betty Skelton and assistant principal Rosemary Jenkinson, both of whom are now deceased, and retired principal Jim McCormick.

Inductions used to be every two years but have not been conducted as regularly since 2008.

“This is to encourage our students today to set high expectations and goals for their own education and careers,” Floyd said. “The Wall of Fame was dedicated to serve as a constant reminder of our graduates’ potential.”

Past inductees’ photos and information are displayed on a large plaque located in the lobby outside of the auditorium.

Nominations for the honor are now being accepted for the induction class of 2015.

To be considered a candidate for Wall of Fame honors, nominees must have graduated at least 10 years ago, have been recognized by their peers as highly successful in their chosen career field and have received district, state, national or international commendations or awards for their contributions.

Nominees can be living or deceased.

A committee made up of teachers and people from the community will evaluate the nominations and choose inductees.

Nomination forms are available at the high school or can be downloaded from the high school’s website at scsc.k12.in.us and printed and mailed to Wall of Fame Committee, Renaissance Director-Dean of Students Aaron Floyd, 1350 W. Second St., Seymour IN 47274.

A ceremony to recognize inductees will be in the high school auditorium on the Friday of homecoming, and they will be recognized during the homecoming game that night. They also will be invited to take part in a private reception dinner with their families.
