Bowl for Kids’ Sake seeking participants

Bowlers still are needed to participate in the Jackson County Bowl for Kids’ Sake on Sunday.

There are about 15 to 20 spots available for teams for the 21st annual fundraiser, which benefits the local Big Brothers Big Sisters program, a mentoring program for kids.

“The event is a day to pay it forward for the kids in the community but also to spend a positive day with others,” said Kate Eder, executive director of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southeast Indiana, which includes Jackson County.

Jackson County has 53 matches of “bigs” and “littles” or adults and kids. They include volunteers in either the one-to-one program or an adult and child meeting in the community; lunch buddies or an adult and child lunch time once a week at school; and high school “bigs,” which matches teens with elementary students.

Sunday’s bowling times are set for noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Kingpins Bowl, 643 S. Airport Road in Seymour. Eder said the noon slot needs teams.

This year, Eder said the goal is to raise $38,000, and all proceeds will go to mentoring programs and expansion efforts. Last year, $35,500 was raised.

To participate, individuals need to organize a four-member team and raise a minimum of $45 per person. Collections need to be brought the day of the event.

Each bowler will receive one hour and 15 minutes of free bowling, free shoe rental, free pizza and soft drinks and a Bowl for Kids’ Sake T-shirt with the chance to win door prizes.

There also will be extra incentives for those who raise more than the minimum amount, and a silent auction will be conducted.

One of the “bigs” who will be in attendance is Shawn Malone, a Seymour resident who is in his first year with the lunch buddies program. He meets his “little” once a week at school to eat, and if they have time, shoot hoops and work on math games on the computer.

Malone has been a part of Bowl for Kids’ Sake for seven years, and so far this year, he has personally raised $200. His goal is $750.

To him, Bowl for Kids’ Sake is important because it funds the program that he considers a way for the child and adult to grow and learn from one another.

“It is designed with both people in mind to help the children but also to hopefully help the adult, which I believe it does,” Malone said.
