Hitting the floor running

Since Angi Bergstedt has been running track since middle school, she said she doesn’t mind when Trinity Lutheran High School basketball coach Mike Lang tells the team to do some running.

“I’m really big into running,” she said. “That is probably my favorite thing.”

She is in her fourth season of playing basketball at Trinity and is looking forward to another outstanding season of track and field in the spring.

In basketball, Bergstedt was in the starting lineup for a few games her junior year and was a starter at the beginning of this season. She suffered a concussion in the Sheridan Holiday Tournament and has been coming off the bench throughout this month.

She said she likes to be aggressive on offense and would rather drive for a layup than shoot a jump shot.

The right-hander said she would rather play on the left side of the offense so she can take advantage of her quickness in going to the basket.

“Usually, they put me on the baseline or the wing, and I tend to do a lot of drives,” she said. “I get the ball, and I drive it, and I’m pretty quick at that.”

Bergstedt said she would rather face man-to-man defense, and she likes it when the Cougars run a fast break.

“I like using my speed when I play,” she said.

On defense, Bergstedt also prefers man-to-man. She said the size of opposing players determines where she plays.

“Sometimes, my coach has me guard one of the point guards because he feels like I can keep up with them pretty well,” she said. “I like half-court press because I know I can pick them up right there, but I’m also prepared to play full-court.”

To be successful in games, Bergstedt said the team needs to work hard in practice.

“I don’t think our coach is too hard on us,” she said. “I think he knows what he is doing and knows how to get us to where we all know we should be. Sometimes it’s hard, and sometimes we don’t like it. But in the end, we all know it’s good.”

With teamwork, Bergstedt said she thinks the Cougars can be close to .500 going into the sectional.

“I think we need to focus on the little things, like our passes and make sure we know who we have when we pick (the opponent) up in man (defense) and free throws,” she said. “We are a young team, but that benefits us, too, since we have different points of youth from different people.”

In track and field, Bergstedt has been a regional qualifier the past three seasons.

She holds the school record in the 200-meter dash and was part of the 400-meter relay team that set the school mark.

She said the 200 is her favorite individual event.

“I’ve been setting the school record numerous times,” she said. “I started breaking it my freshman year. I did it twice my freshman year, twice my sophomore year and two or three times my junior year.”

This spring, she said she would like to set the record in the 100-meter dash. She didn’t start running that event until the end of her sophomore season.

“I’ve had the goal of breaking the 100 record for a while, so that’s my goal this year, and to keep getting faster in the 200,” she said. “My biggest goal is to make it to state.”

Bergstedt said she usually anchors the 400 relay and also runs a lap in the 1,600-meter relay.

While the 1,600 relay isn’t her favorite, she said she likes the ending because that is where she sometimes has to catch up and push it.

“We had a coach come in and teach us handoffs my junior year, and that made a huge difference compared to my sophomore year,” she said.

In both of her sports, Bergstedt said she focuses on having a positive outlook.

“In basketball, if you don’t make that free throw or shot early, you have to pick yourself back up and do it, and you have to keep yourself going,” she said. “In track, if you win or you lose, you have to tell yourself even if you lost to push yourself, but even if you won not to let it get to you, and you have to race your next race as if nothing happened before.”
