Donald L. Shipley, 83, of Bloomington, died Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014.

The son of Lee and Ruth Shipley, he grew up in Brownstown. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, went to Indiana University and became an English and social studies teacher, working for 15 years at Columbus Junior High School.

He switched careers in 1972 to the Indiana State Teachers Association to be a full-time advocate for teachers. He worked with six association locals in Monroe, Lawrence, Brown and Morgan counties for more than 20 years before he retired as a UniServ director.

Survivors include his wife of 23 years, Eva Shipley; two daughters, Martha Steele and Kimberly Evans; a son, Eric Shipley; two sisters, Alice Zike and Margaret Jones; and two granddaughters, Nicole Merlow and Carrie Marchant.

Family and friends may call from 4 to 6 p.m. today at The Funeral Chapel of Powell and Deckard, 3000 E. Third St., Bloomington, immediately followed by a memorial service at 6 p.m. with Pastor David Wiggington officiating.

Don’s final resting place will be at Valhalla Memory Gardens.
