Uninsured Jackson County residents with questions about enrolling in HealthCare.gov can talk with the experts

on Dec. 9.

Schneck Medical Center will hold an information session at 6 p.m. that day at the hospital’s auditorium. Attendees can enter through the visitor’s entrance.

Stephanie Furlow, director of marketing and public relations at Schneck, said the event is free and open to anyone interested in learning about how to obtain health insurance under the provisions of the Affordable Care Act.

There will be someone from the insurance industry available to answer questions and offer one-on-one instruction and a certified health care navigator, which serves as a guide for HealthCare.gov.

“We will not be doing actual enrollment, only helping with education, answering questions, etc.,” Furlow said.

Open enrollment on

HealthCare.gov, which is called the Marketplace, began Nov. 15 and will continue through Feb. 15. Coverage can begin as early as Jan. 1 for those signed up by Dec. 15.

The Marketplace offers private health insurance with savings based on income. This is the outcome of President Barack Obama’s health care law.

Furlow said plans cover essential health benefits, pre-existing conditions and preventive care. Most people who apply on HealthCare.gov qualify for premium tax credits and savings on out-of-pocket costs based on household size and income.

For those who can’t attend the session, there also are health care navigators available to answer questions Monday through Friday at the Community Health Center of Jackson County. It’s located 113 N. Chestnut St. in Seymour, and appointments are recommended.

According to HealthCare.gov, any American who doesn’t have health coverage in 2015 will have to pay a fee.

The fee will be the higher of these two amounts: 2 percent of their yearly household income or $325 per person for the year ($162.50 per child younger than 18).
