Main street re-emerging downtown

A once-active organization designed to promote and encourage downtown Seymour recently incorporated and hopes to rise again. “We sort of put this together in the context of the Leadership Jackson County program,” city Attorney Jeffrey Jackson said of the Seymour Main Street program.

The city had a Main Street program in the mid-1990s, and that organization played a key role in having the downtown area placed on the National Register of Historic Places, Martha McIntire said.

“They did that mainly because of the tax benefits that are available through such a designation,” McIntire, the city’s community development director, added.

McIntire said the reasons the original Main Street organization fell by the wayside cannot be determined.
