Owls light up scoreboard on Jennings County 44-0; Travel to New Albany for final HHC game next week

Seymour had everything go their way on Friday against Jennings County, dominating the Panthers 44-0, holding their conference opponent to four total yards of offense throughout the game.

The Owls went up 30-0 at halftime after two rushing touchdowns from Mikey Wright, a score from Nicholas Wheeler and Jaylan Johnson.

Combine that with a pitch-perfect defensive performance from Seymour, and the results were not the best for the Panthers.

Jennings County was limited to just 4 total yards of offense. The Panthers had 17 passing yards and negative 13 rushing yards.

Owls Head Coach Tyson Moore spoke about the complete effort afterwards.

“We lit the scoreboard up and filled the stat sheet,” Moore said. “I wasn’t pleased with our sloppy level of play, and I thought we got too complacent at times. But, if we can continue to get better at what we are doing and eliminate the silly penalties and the stupid stuff, we will be alright.”

Moore was not thrilled with the unnecessary penalties but mentioned that they will work on cleaning that up.

For Jennings, Brady Franks made his debut as starting QB for the Panthers and Seymour made it one, he would not soon forget, being chased around throughout and not finding much success on the Owls defense.

The tone was set from the beginning by the Owls defense, as Mason Nugent buried the Panthers ball carrier into the ground on the second play of the game.

Nick Wheeler scored a one-yard rushing touchdown to begin the scoring. After an offsides penalty from Jennings on the extra point, Seymour went for two and got it on a rush from Nugent, who got into the end zone.

The senior ran the ball over to the sideline to keep afterwards.

Seymour’s defense must have gotten jealous, scoring their own two points on a safety, the following possession to get in on the scoring action, making it 10-0 after one quarter of play.

The team then added 20 more points in the second, building onto that lead with each possession. Wright scored twice on rushing touchdowns and hit Jaylan Johnson for a 32-yard passing touchdown, it was a 30-point game at the break.

The Owls then held senior night for 53 band and color guard members, who performed during halftime. The band played the Seymour Fight Song, and the second half kicked off with a bit of surprise.

Jennings County attempted an onside kick to open the second half, but it would not travel the required 10-yard distance to be a live football, giving the Owls good field position.

Traysean Hawkins then found the end zone, extending the lead and starting the running clock on the Panthers.

Seymour then put in their backups and still found success on offense with Max Coates at QB. Coates went 3-for-3 with 16 yards, before Brody Bowles carried a 20-yard touchdown for the team, capping the night off for the home team.

Mikey Wright has truly been the meaning of a ‘dual-threat QB’ meaning he can beat you with his arm, and his legs, combining for nearly 300 yards of total offense. The senior tossed a touchdown and ran for two more in the dominant win.

Coach Moore spoke about the offensive performance from his QB.

“Mikey plays with a lot of poise,” Moore said. “Honestly, he has been our best runner this year. Nothing against our running backs, but we have a triple threat with those guys in the backfield. He plays football and he makes plays when he needs too. I think he’s an added weapon, heading into New Albany this week.”

Hawkins compiled 66 yards on 9 carries and a touchdown, while Jaylan Johnson had 115 receiving yards on 5 receptions. Senior wideout Logan Shelly also had 5 catches for the team, picking up 65 yards.

Seymour’s defense put together their best performance of the season, picking up their second shutout of the year.

Moore spoke about his defense, who has been strong all season long.

“This is the third week in a row that I feel like our defense has played really well,” Moore said. “I thought they have handled themselves well and I thought tonight they played a pretty complete game throughout. They dominate the line of scrimmage, get off the football and make plays.”

Seymour travels to New Albany next week and then they host Bloomington South at Bulleit Stadium for their final regular season game on Oct. 18th.
