Donna Mae Wessel, age 91, a lifelong resident of Brownstown, passed away early Wednesday morning, September 25, 2024, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown, surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Wessel was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown, since 1954, where she was involved in the St. Peter’s Married Couples Club, Ladies Aid, and various other committees.

Mrs. Wessel along with her husband, Junior, owned Brownstown Hardware, where she served as the Secretary for over 40 years. She had a love for flowers, gardening, quilting, stamped cross stitch, and needlework. She was actively involved in her community, serving as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, as well as participating in the Home Economics Club for many years. Donna also enjoyed taking dance lessons, making apple cider, attending auctions, and shopping.

Donna had a deep love for her family and demonstrated her commitment to them in every way. In return, she was cherished beyond measure by her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Born on August 15, 1933, at her home in Vallonia, Donna was the daughter of Roy and Louise (Peters) Meahl, both of whom preceded her in death. On June 21, 1953, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wegan, she married Wilbert Henry Wessel, Jr., and he preceded her in death on August 3, 2023.

Survivors include three daughters: Jo Gail (Mike) Ross of Brownstown, Kim Loree (Bob) Lucas of Brownstown, and Dena Lyn (Ronald) Hutchinson of Vallonia; six grandchildren: Michael Brant Ross, Shawn (Tammi) Ross, Karra (Cody) Hercamp, Stacie (Josh) Teipen, Jesse (Kristy) Hutchinson, and Tessa (Brad) Ray; ten great-grandchildren: Mason Ross, Maddox Ross, Josie Ross, Cooper Teipen, Isaac Hutchinson, Eli Hutchinson, Ian Hutchinson, Owen Hutchinson, Remington Ray, McCoy Ray, and Baby Hercamp on the way; one sister, Roselyn Robertson; five sisters-in-law: JoEllen Meahl, Marlyn Meahl, Judy Wessel, Audra (Mike) Deaton, and Opal (Ron) Roark; three brothers-in-law: Bill Wessel, Lee Wessel, and Ivan (Shirley) Wessel; and several nieces and nephews.

Donna was also preceded in death by three brothers: George Meahl, Leroy (Joyce) Meahl, and Ray Meahl; six brothers-in-law: Linford Robertson, Kenny (Eunice) Wessel, Debron (Juanita) Wessel, Kelso Wessel, Ed (Bernice) Wessel, and Walter R. Wessel; and three sisters-in-law: Wilma Wessel, Rosa Nell Wessel, and Violet (Robert) Wischmeier.

Funeral services for Donna Mae Wessel will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown, with Pastor Ryan Schneider officiating. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Brownstown.

Interment will be at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Brownstown.

Memorials may be given to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Prayer Garden Beautification Committee or St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Cemetery Fund, Brownstown.
