Retired teachers meet at Seymour church

Jackson County Retired Teachers Association met Thursday, Sept. 19, at First United Methodist Church in Seymour with the theme “Remember When … The Music.”

The tables were decorated in a fall theme provided by Carolyn Bridges, Sandy Melloncamp and Laurinda Isaacs.

President Bonnie Koontz welcomed the 41 members and guests and led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. A Moment of silence was held in remembrances of deceased teachers, Ruth Gossman, Brenda Holzworth, John Myers and Roselyn McCormick.

The secretary’s minutes and treasurer’s report were approved.

Newly retired teachers introduced were Blake Hackman, Brownstown Central High School, and Karen Ault, Brownstown Middle School, who was recently awarded “Teacher of the Year” by the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce.

Cheryl Corning, Area 10 director, encouraged members to thank their legislators for the 13th check and to join the Indiana Retired Teachers Association.

Bonnie attended the Representative Assembly on June 12 in Indianapolis. The state association’s 75th anniversary will be celebrated in 2025. Members are asked to contribute $25 to the state association’s foundation to increase the endowment.

Bonnie led the group in a unison invocation. Following the meal served by the women of the church, door prizes were presented to Leona Kelley, Becky Combs, Debra Baker Schneider and Hackman.

Members were treated to a “Remember When … The Music” by DJ Ellen Olmstead who played requested songs. Each person introduced themselves and identified the member’s song. Deb Schwartz won the prize with the most identified.

The meeting was adjourned The next meeting will be Feb. 20, 2025.
