Silver Creek scored two goals in each half to defeat Seymour 4-0 in girl’s soccer on the Owls’ field Saturday.

Makayla Doherty scored the only goal the Dragons needed at 21:58 of the first half, then she scored again at 19:36.

Seymour Coach Greg Musser said, “It’s a tough stretch for us right now. We had a lot of good competition early on in the year where we didn’t have a whole lot of practice to fix things that were going wrong.

“We’ve played two games since we’ve had about a week-and-a-half where we’ve practiced again and our results are definitely much closer games. At the beginning of the year we really weren’t doing much offensively or defensively, but now we’re competing.

“New Albany beat us 3-1 Thursday. That was a battle for a while. This was a close game. Silver Creek’s a good team. I think they’re 9-2 now. It was 2-0 at the half, and we’re battling. We give up a PK, things happen.”

A goal by Jordan Lewis at 26:39 made it a 3-0 game before Lydia Wright scored a penalty kick with 14:05 remaining.

The Owls were unable to get a shot on goal in the first half. Elsie Herbert had a shot on goal with just under 20 minutes remaining, and Ella Brock had a shot in the closing minutes.

Maggie Calhoun had four goal saves in the first half and Dhamara Aguilar had six goal saves in the second half.

Musser said his team battled until the end.

“I love the fight that our girls continue to show, because it is not easy to do when you’re in the midst of a losing streak, but these girls are showing up, they’re ready to work and you can see the small, little improvements that they’re making from the practices that we’ve had in these last two games.”

He said in order to get more shots on goal, “I think it comes down to our touch. We were talking to them after the game. When we make a pass it’s bouncing, so we’re trying to settle that pass and it’s bouncing.

“It’s a little hard for us to attack when we can’t control that initial pass. That is something we’ll focus on in the next couple days in practices, making sure our passes have intent that they are on the ground so we can receive them in transition.”

Musser said the Owls’ mid field defense was improved

“We did a better job. We’ve moved some pieces around, we’ve done some different things throughout the course of the season, changing formations, so we’re trying to teach some people some new spots. They’re getting a little bit better about it.

“They’re staying a little more central now. Once they get comfortable in their positions then the aggression can come.”

The Owls are playing without junior striker Katy Roark, who is sidelined with an ankle injury.

“Katy has a knack of finding the goal, so she’s a good goal-to-back type player, which is what we need in the type of formation we are in.

“So she is going to be missed, but we’ve got some girls that are stepping up and taking advantage of some opportunities, so hopefully by the end of the year when she returns, we’ll have a more well-rounded group that can kind of support because they’re going to be learning on the fly in the games which is a good thing because there is no substitute for game experience.”

The Owls (1-9) have Hoosier Hills Conference matches Tuesday at Floyd central and Thursday at Bedford North Lawrence.
