BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Central Community School Corp. board of school trustees recognized the Braves of the Month for September during a meeting Monday night at the administration office.

Those honored were Brownstown Central High School senior Haley Derringer, Brownstown Central Middle School eighth-grader Christian Nolan and Brownstown Elementary School fifth-grader Emily Lewis.

High school Principal Joe Sheffer said Derringer was selected as the student of the month by the science department teachers.

“Haley Derringer is an exceptional science student who is dedicated to her learning,” they wrote. “She consistently tries her best, going above and beyond to understand complex concepts. Haley is not only committed to her own success but also to helping others, always willing to assist classmates and contribute to group projects.

“Her inquisitive nature drives her to ask thoughtful questions. Her hard work and positive attitude make her a standout student in the classroom. She is a joy to have in class and we appreciate her enthusiasm and dedication.”

Doug McClure, the middle school principal, said Nolan was nominated by the eighth grade teachers.

“Christian is a very conscious worker in his daily assignments and consistently completes high-quality work,” they wrote. “Not only is Christian excelling academically, he has exhibited the qualities of respectfulness and being polite and considerate of others.

“He is a very mature and responsible student who takes his learning seriously. Christian has volunteered to become one of the first BCMS students to participate in the well-rounded assessment classes offered through IU during the Brave period.”

The assessment program is a collaboration between the Indiana Department of Education and Indiana University to develop high quality, engaging virtual courses designed and taught by licensed Indiana teachers. Students who are not in need of remediation during the Brave period were invited to participate in the program. Twenty five of the 50 BCMS sixth- and seventh-grade students invited to participate in May including Nolan, elected to do so this fall as returning seventh- and eighth-graders, McClure said.

“In addition of academics, Christian participates in both baseball and tennis. We appreciate Christian’s effort and attitude on a daily basis.”

McClure said Nolan was an outstanding young eighth grader.

Marty Young, the principal at Brownstown Elementary School, said Lewis was nominated for outstanding achievement by music teacher Aramatta Schaffer.

“Emily is an absolute joy to have in class,” she wrote in her nomination letter.

“She is ever attentive and always ready to help others. Emily is always happy to participate and set an example for the rest of her class. I look forward to another amazing year with her.”

Young said he would also like to add Emily is a fun student to be around.

“She is always smiling and working hard,” he said. “Emily is a leader in the classroom and a perfect representative of our BES slogan of “Work Hard, Be Nice” while showing kindness and respect at all times.”
