After dropping their opening match to Waldron, the Seymour boys’ tennis team has been on a roll, winning seven straight matches heading into Thursday’s meet with Bedford North Lawrence.

The Owls took care of business, sweeping their conference opponent 5-0 to win their 8th straight match. It was also senior night, and those seniors didn’t dissapoint in their performances. Seymour Head Coach PJ Stein spoke on the winning effort from the team on Thursday night.

“It was a good win across the board,” Stein said. “Our singles dominated early and kept their foot on the gas. We had a bit of a different lineup in two doubles with senior Griffin Eggers getting the start tonight. He played well for us on senior night.”

Owls No. 1 player Parker Thompson defeated Jackson Corey, 6-2, and 6-0. The senior felt he did not play as well as he could have.

“Teamwise, obviously it was good, winning the match 5-0,” Thompson said. “Individually, I actually didn’t think I played great, but I was still able to get the victory.”

Owls. No. 2 Carter Stein swept his opponent in both sets, defeating Braxton Fugate, 6-0, 6-0. No. 3 Dane Thompson defeated Asher Thompson, 6-2, and 6-0.

Three of the four players in doubles action for the Owls were seniors.

Joel Stevens on the one double team with junior Shun Takeuchi, winning their matchup with Orion Hill and Neal Patel, 6-0, and 6-4.

Stevens spoke about his performance on senior night.

“The first set went really well, we ended up winning 6-0,” Stevens said. “We may have gotten a little cocky, but they started playing better, but obviously we came back to win and get the sweep.”

Xavier DuBois and Griffin Eggers are both seniors, defeating Micah Carter and Wyatt Corbin, 6-4, and 6-3, securing the first varsity win for Eggers. Both seniors spoke about their win on Thursday.

“I thought we all played very well as a team,” Eggers said. “Coming away with a 5-0 victory is always good, and I’m very thankful for my group of teammates.”

DuBois thought a clear head made the difference in their win.

“First and foremost, I would like to thank god, my lord and savior,” DuBois said. “Performance wise it was a shaky first start, but the key was keeping a level head and continuing to play our game.”

All four seniors spoke about their winning stretch of tennis since the opening loss to Waldron.

“I think that first match was a wake-up call,” DuBois said. “We went to Bloomington North the next night and I think we all had that in the back of our mind, we should’ve beat that team, and we’ve used that as fuel.”

Eggers had a simple explanation for the winning streak.

“Our team just can’t be defeated apparently,” he said.

The whole team laughed after Eggers answered with that phrase. Joel Stevens thinks the difference from the opening match was team chemistry.

“I think it was team chemistry, we had just enough practice to compete in our first match,” Stevens said. “We all keep each other’s energy up and keep each other motivated to keep winning games.”

Thompson is happy with where the team is right now.

“We’ve had some big wins since that opening loss, working hard in practice and having a lot of fun together,” he said.

Coach Stein is confident in the lineup he has put together this season.

“We’ve found our lineup that we like, we’ve got some guys who are performing well,” Stein said. “We are hoping we can continue to keep it rolling into this weekend’s match with Silver Creek.”

Seniors Eggers and Thompson are both enjoying playing for first-year varsity head coach in Stein. Both players believe it’s helped the team in multiple ways during the ongoing season.

“Coach (Stein) has been great during his first season here,” Eggers said. “He’s been better than any coach we’ve had before, and I can’t thank him enough for all he has done.”

No. 1 player Thompson could not be happier sitting at 8-1 during his senior year. He spoke on why he believes the team has played well at the start of the season.

“Well, our coaching is good, we also have younger guys in the system who are helping us run practice,” Thompson said. “Coaching has also been a big step up from what it has been, and it’s helping us out a lot.”

The Owls will compete in the Silver Creek Invitational against three ranked opponents Friday and Saturday, facing the likes of Silver Creek, Floyd Central, and Evansville Memorial, who are all ranked teams.

Seymour is eyeing a sectional three-peat if they can continue their magic into the postseason.
