Owls stunned 14-12 behind late rally from Jeffersonville

It is never over, until it is over, and the Owls found that out on Friday evening against Jeffersonville. Essentially having a grip on the lead until the last minute, allowing the Red Devils to steal a two-point win.

The heat didn’t let up either as both teams battled to find the upper hand in the first quarter, ending the period at a 0-0 stalemate.

After that slow quarter, Owls QB Mikey Wright threw a touchdown to Logan Shelly to open the second period with a 47-yard scoring play.

In the third quarter, the two connected again to make it 12-0, as the Owls didn’t convert any of their two-point conversions, clinging onto the lead.

Jeffersonville tossed a 74-yard touchdown and followed that with a 10-yard quarterback rushing touchdown with 33 seconds remaining from Riko Wright to steal the victory in Bulleit Stadium over Seymour 14-12. All of this took place in the fourth quarter.

The comeback left the Owls and fans absolutely stunned. It was the first win for Jeffersonville since a Sept. 23 win over Silver Creek in 2022. The victory snapped a 15-game losing streak for the program.

Head Coach Tyson Moore spoke about the two-point loss to the Red Devils.

“We took this one on the chin,” he said. “I thought we played hard, and you cannot say anything about our effort tonight. We just didn’t make enough plays at the end of the day. Some weird things happened, that is a part of football and a part of sports sometimes.”

The Seymour defense had a stranglehold on Jeffersonville for three quarters, other than a couple plays at the end, the Owls did not give up a whole lot throughout the night.

“Our defense played lights out tonight,” Coach Moore said. “Our defense being able to showcase their ability to play with an athletic team like Jeffersonville is huge. They are one of the most athletic teams we will play this year, each year that’s how it is.”

“I thought our defense was able to make plays all night, obviously we gave that one away at the worst possible time, but that’s football,” he said. “It’s a tough pill to swallow, I will be thinking about this for a while. But you must remember the good things we did tonight, and I thought our defense brought it.

Senior night was spoiled by the Red Devils, after Seymour held a 6-0 lead at halftime. Jaylan Johnson then picked off his third ball of the season in the third quarter. Then Wright found Shelly for his second touchdown of the evening to take the 12-0 lead.

Jeffersonville scored with 11 minutes left in the fourth to make it 12-7. The Red Devils continued to knock at the door, missing a field goal on their next possession.

The opposing Red Devils missed a huge opportunity, with the quarterback overthrowing a wide-open receiver on third down in the fourth quarter. It came down to fourth down, if Seymour could make the stop, the game would be over, then the unthinkable transpired.

Jeffersonville converted the fourth, heaving a 50-yard bomb to get inside the Owls 25-yard line with 40 seconds remaining in the game. Eventually leading to Riko Wright sneaking it in the end-zone for a 10-yard touchdown and snagging the victory right underneath the feet of Seymour.

Jeffersonville also stifled the running game of Seymour, who was limited to 35 yards of rushing. Coach Moore spoke about improving the play up front.

“We’ve got to figure out how to run the football,” Moore said. “Plain and simple we were terrible up front tonight; guys weren’t getting to the second level. We were not taking care of their defensive ends, and they lived in our backfield throughout the entire night. We must figure out how to run the football; we can’t throw the ball every time. Last week I thought we had an excellent balance on offense, that wasn’t the case this week.”

Seymour is on the road next Friday against another Hoosier Hills Conference opponent in Columbus East. That game is expected to start at 7 p.m.
