Owls top Braves 4-1 on tennis courts Saturday

Seymour boys’ tennis team swept the singles matches and split the doubles against Brownstown Central; Saturday morning for a 4-1 win on the Seymour courts.

Seymour coach PJ Stein was pleased with the win.

“It was a very good win today over a rival, Brownstown. Singles got on top early and just kept it rolling all day. They were off the court quickly.

“Really dominant performances across the board with the exception of No. 1 doubles. We knew that was probably going to be a tough point. It was a back-and-forth match.

“I’m proud of their effort. Too many unforced errors in that match were our main problem.”

Seymour’s singles wins came from Parker Thompson, 6-2, 6-1 over Smith Hackman at No. 1, Carter Stein 6-0, 6-0 over Chase Brock at No. 2, and Dane Thompson 6-1, 6-0 against Brady Davis at No. 3

That was Davis’ first loss after three wins this season.

Braves coach Donnie Thomas said, “I liked No. 1 doubles coming back. They just need to learn a little bit more about doubles and the way they play. They play two back a lot which is more than I’d like them to.

“They hustle and they move so well that they get to a lot of balls other people can’t get to.”

Thomas talked about changing Wheeler and Stewart from singles to doubles.

“Last year we won 11 or 12 matches on three courts, and then they went 22-1 on two singles and three singles. Winning two courts doesn’t cut it, you’ve got to win three.

“I want them to go through the tournament as far as they can at one doubles. Smith is a senior and he’ll have a chance to go through, too, but we’ve got to pick up another court.

“We’ve got to get Chase playing better, and Max (Peters) was sick today, which made a difference. Brady rides with Max, and so does Chase, and both were acting like they were about to get sick, and Max is sick, so I think they had something, too.

“Hopefully, come sectional time we’re all healthy and we’ll see if we can’t do a little better than we did today.

“Singles needs to quit putting the ball right down the middle to the person. They’re putting the ball down the middle of the court, they never get any angles on the ball to put the ball away, and they just wait for somebody to make a mistake. You’ve got to have some winners.”

The Braves’ point came at No. 1 doubles where Pierson Wheeler and Lane Steward defeated Shun Takeuchi and Joel Stevens 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.

Steward and Wheeler played singles matches in past seasons but are 4-0 this season.

Steward said last year he played No. 3 singles.

“(Doubles) is definitely a lot different, but I like it because Pierson is really good. He knows what he is doing, we both have good strategy and we’re still learning. We’re used to singles, but we’re going to learn and we’re going to come back even better next time.

“I think doubles is more fun, but it’s a lot harder. You’ve got to keep the ball away from the net guy as well as the back guy. You’ve got to focus a lot more in singles. “I think we need to improve on our communication and keep it away from the net guy and just get better shots down the line, cross court and all that good stuff.”

Seymour’s Xavier DuBois and Braylon Busby topped Trey Isaacs and Jace Reasoner 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles.

DuBois said, “I’ve been playing doubles pretty much my high school career. I think for Braylon and me it was getting up to the net and definitely punishing them as much as we could up there.

“We would set a deep ball and that way we could force them to hit us a lob and just work off of that.”

DuBois said he feels like communication between him and Busby is good. “For me it’s getting my ground strokes, working on returns and everything. I’ve been doing really well at the net, but my ground strokes haven’t been up to par recently, so I definitely have to work on that.

“You don’t need to worry as much with your backhand for doubles, so you can call your guy if you don’t think you can get to that ball.

“We’re getting the ball rolling, hoping we can keep it going.”

The Owls finished the week 4-1, winning four straight matches after losing to Waldron. “I’m happy with the start to our season,” Coach Stein said.

“Consistency has to be the key. Looking to that (No. 1 doubles) match up in the sectional, you have to give yourself a chance to win the point and we didn’t do that very much today.”

The Owls will go to Shelbyville on Tuesday.

Brownstown (2-2) will be home to Silver Creek tomorrow.
