A traffic stop on Thursday evening on Seymour’s west side led to the discovery of enough fentanyl to kill 3,500 people and the arrest of the 31-year-old Jackson County man possessing it, police report.

Francisco Rendon Reyes of Seymour faces a Level 5 felony charge of possession of a schedule I controlled substance (narcotic) and possession of paraphernalia, according to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.

He said Rendon Reyes was arrested after Seymour Officer Dakota Burke conducted a traffic stop on a red 2018 Toyota Corolla at about 9:37 p.m. at 101 Community Drive.

After identifying Reyes as the driver and a passenger who was not arrested, Burke said he became suspicious of drug activity and called in county Officer Kevin Settle and his K-9 Zanko.

After performing a free air sniff of the vehicle, Zanko showed a positive alert to the odor of illegal narcotics/controlled substances emitting from the vehicle, police reported.

Officers then obtained a warrant to conduct a probable cause search of the vehicle, Meyer said.

During that search, police found items of paraphernalia commonly associated with the use of methamphetamine, he said.

While searching Rendon Reyes officers also found approximately 6.5 grams of suspected fentanyl, Meyer said.

Reyes was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 2:08 a.m. Friday and being held without bond pending his initial hearing in Jackson Circuit Court.
