Seymour hosted Jennings County, Trinity Lutheran and Bedford North Lawrence on Tuesday evening at Shadowood Golf Course.

The Stars took the win with a team score of 168, led by Ellie Horton who carded a 40 to earn medalist honors. Kinleigh Root and Emma Endris both recorded 42’s in nine-holes of work for the Stars.

Seymour was led by Shana Spray who carded a 43. The sophomore has continued to drop strokes, after shooting a 45 on Monday against Columbus East.

Owl Katie Cottrill followed with a 49, while Emmy Followell shot a 52. Emily Windley recorded a 54 in her nine holes. Seymour finished in second place with a team score of 198. Jennings County finished in third place with 225.

Owls Assistant Coach Brian Tidd spoke on the outcome after the match.

“Our number one player (Spray) played really well tonight,” Tidd said. “She actually double-bogeyed the last two holes, so she had a real chance at being medalist. After shooting a 191 on Monday, we shot 198 as a team tonight. The back two players kind of struggled a little bit, but hey, it is still early in the season and these girls have improved.”

The Seymour coaches have been working with players on their game.

“We’ve been working with them on their swings,” Tidd said. “I think they’re starting to trust Jim (Hoffman) and I.”

Tidd believes improving the short game will help the team cut even more strokes.

“Chipping and putting around the greens will help us a lot,” Tidd said. “I noticed a couple of times where we had a double chip, where it took two shots to get on the green. If we can cut those down, we will cut some strokes off our scores.”

Trinity Lutheran’s Jennifer Jones shot a 64 for the Cougars on Tuesday night. Jones will be the only girl on the team this season.

Cougars Head Coach Brooks Thoele spoke on the encouraging performance from Jones.

“Tonight was a great performance, especially compared to last week,” he said. “We knew it was going to be a year of improvement and she delivered. She shaved seven strokes from her performance last week.”

Thoele is excited to continue working with Jones throughout this season and in the future.

“Early on the best parts of her game is that she has such a good attitude and has all around a positive way about her,” Thoele said. “You cannot ask for a better kid to teach than one that doesn’t get discouraged, especially with a game like golf.”

The coach spoke about Jones putting in the time and working on her swing to improve.

“We’ve been working on her swing a lot and I’m very proud of how much she has improved,” Thoele said. “She has even worked on it in her own time at home. I am excited to see where the season takes her and hopefully the next two years as well.”
