The sun stayed away, allowing for a cool evening for girls’ golf. The Lady Braves hosted their first match of the 2024 season on Monday at Hickory Hills Golf Course in Brownstown.

The team faced off against Mitchell and Orleans, successfully defending their home course with the winning score of 197. Khloe Lingenfelter led the way with a 43, followed by Abby Schroer (46) and Jayda Clodfelder (48).

Lingenfelter recorded four pars during her 9-hole round.

Claire Brelage recorded a 60, while Kinsley Schroeder scored a 65 and Mairi Shaw finished with. a 67. Orleans finished with a score of 244, while Mitchell only brought two golfers to the meet.

Abby Schroer spoke about her performance on Monday night.

“I thought I could’ve played better, I had a few dinky shots, but overall, I felt pretty good about it,” Schroer said.

The senior was asked about her favorite part about playing Hickory Hills.

“I like how open this course is,” she said. “I feel like I can hit my drives pretty well here.” Schroer said that she feels that she’s hitting her drives well early in the season.

She had back-to-back pars on holes 2 and 3 during her round. She mentioned that her putting game needs to improve.

“My short game must improve, I need to get better around the greens, that would help me out a lot.

The Lady Braves are a tight group of girls according to Schroer, which she really enjoys being a part of.

“That’s my favorite part about this team, I love how close we are as a group,” she said.

Head Coach Brandon Allman spoke about the outcome on Monday.

“It’s always nice to get a win at home especially for our first match,” he said. “I was able to get all of our girls some experience which will be beneficial going forward.”

The coach said what the team must improve on as the season continues.

“We need the girls’ confidence to keep improving and that is from the top to bottom,” he said. “Our overall ball striking has to also get better. Our newer girls will see much improvement with their scores when they get more consistency making solid contact.”

Brownstown travels to Sunrise Golf Course on Saturday for a match with the Madison Cubs at 1 p.m. The team will then travel to Western Hills Golf Course on Monday for a match with Eastern (Pekin). The match will start at 5 p.m.
