County director of emergency management to retire Aug. 23

Jackson County’s director of emergency management has announced his retirement from the position.

Duane Davis, who has held the position for the past 21 years, is set to retire Aug. 23.

“It has been a pleasure to serve Jackson County residents,” Davis wrote. “I am most thankful for the relationships built in Jackson County as well as in District 8, across the State of Indiana, and with the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. My prayer is that Emergency Management will continue to build relationships with the local, district, and state partners. Over the years not one person can be successful without an army of like-minded partners to serve their community.”

Below is a letter by Davis addressed to County Commissioner Drew Markel:

Dear Drew Markel,

After much reflection, I am writing to announce my retirement from my position as Director of Emergency Management for Jackson County, effective August 23, 2024. After 40 years of public service, including 33 years with Jackson County and the past 21 years as the Director of Emergency Management, I am ready to embark on the next chapter of my life.

My journey with Jackson County has been deeply fulfilling. I have been privileged to work alongside dedicated professionals and contribute to the safety and well-being of our community. Over the past two decades as Director. I have witnessed significant developments in our emergency management strategies and am proud of the progress we have made in enhancing our preparedness and response capabilities.

I am immensely grateful for the opportunities I have had to grow both personally and professionally within this organization. The support and collaboration from my colleagues and the community have been instrumental in achieving our goals and sustaining our mission. The relationships and experiences gained throughout these years will always be cherished.

As I transition into retirement, I am committed to ensuring a smooth handover of my responsibilities. I am more than willing to assist in any way possible to facilitate this process and support my successor.

Thank you for the incredible support, trust, and camaraderie throughout my career. It has been an honor to serve Jackson County, and I look forward to seeing the continued success and growth of our department.
